Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has commended Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe and eight other senators for aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing their decision as a courageous step taken in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Atiku said the lawmakers’ move was not driven by personal gain but by a commitment to strengthening democratic values and protecting the nation’s political balance.
He noted that at a time when many politicians are being pressured to join the ruling party, the senators’ decision to stand with the opposition sends a strong signal of courage, conviction, and dedication to national interest.
According to the former presidential candidate, democracy cannot thrive without a credible opposition capable of holding the government accountable.
“Democracy without credible opposition is democracy in name only,” Atiku stated.
He added that the presence of principled lawmakers within opposition ranks would strengthen the collective voice demanding accountability, good governance, and better leadership for Nigerians.
Atiku further stressed that when political leaders choose principle over pressure, the nation ultimately benefits.
He expressed optimism that the development would contribute to building a stronger, more just, and more prosperous Nigeria.
The former vice president’s remarks followed the recent defection of Senator Yaroe and eight other senators who have aligned with the ADC, a move seen by observers as a significant development in the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s opposition politics.
