Nine senators of the Nigerian Senate, including Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in the political configuration of the National Assembly.
The defections were formally announced during plenary when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letters submitted by the lawmakers on the floor of the Senate.
Those who joined the ADC alongside Senator Binos include:Aminu Waziri Tambuwal – Sokoto South. Enyinnaya Abaribe – Abia South. Victor Umeh – Anambra Central. Tony Nwoye – Anambra North. Lawal Adamu Usman – Kaduna Central. Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo – Nasarawa South Austin Akobundu – Abia Central. Ireti Kingibe – FCT
Most of the senators defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, citing internal crises, leadership disputes and ongoing litigations within their former parties as major reasons for their decision.
In his explanation, Senator Binos Yaroe said the move was part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s multiparty democracy and prevent the country from drifting toward a one-party system. Political observers say the development could reshape the minority bloc in the Senate, with the ADC gaining stronger representation in the upper legislative chamber ahead of future political alignments. The latest defections bring the number of senators in the ADC caucus to nine, making the party a more visible force in the Senate’s opposition landscape.
