The Adamawa State Government has issued a public health and environmental alert over worsening air quality across the state, warning residents that the current atmospheric condition is not ordinary harmattan but a high level of air pollution that could pose serious health risks.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Adamawa State Ministry of Environment said exposure to the polluted air may lead to breathing difficulties, reduced lung function, respiratory infections, and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.
The Ministry urged residents to take precautionary measures to protect themselves, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
According to the advisory, members of the public are encouraged to wear nose masks, especially in dusty or crowded environments, limit outdoor activities where possible, and drink plenty of clean water. Residents were also advised to keep food and drinking water properly covered, and to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
The Ministry assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as necessary. Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and to strictly adhere to the safety guidelines in order to safeguard public health.
The advisory was signed by the Ministry of Environment on behalf of the Adamawa State Government.
