The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) is set to complete a major electricity network upgrade that is expected to significantly improve power supply, stimulate economic activities, and enhance living standards across its franchise areas in Northeast Nigeria.
The large-scale infrastructure rehabilitation, which is nearing completion, is part of YEDC’s strategic investment to modernise its distribution network, reduce power outages, and create a more reliable electricity supply for households, small businesses, and industries.

Energy experts note that improved electricity infrastructure remains a critical driver of economic growth, particularly for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and local manufacturing hubs.
The YEDC upgrade is therefore expected to reduce production costs, improve business efficiency, and attract new investments within the region.
The project, being implemented in phases, involves the replacement of obsolete recline cables, rehabilitation of distribution transformers, and comprehensive upgrades of distribution lines and poles.
These interventions are designed to minimise feeder faults, reduce technical losses, and improve voltage stability across the network.Key elements of the upgrade include the installation of high-capacity transformers to strengthen power distribution, deployment of advanced metering infrastructure to enhance billing accuracy and transparency, and reinforcement of aging distribution lines to improve system reliability.
Although some customers may experience temporary power interruptions due to the accelerated pace of the rehabilitation works, YEDC said the short-term disruptions are necessary to fast-track completion and ensure long-term service improvements.

Speaking on the developmental importance of the project, YEDC’s Communications Officer, Blessing Tunoh, said the upgrade reflects the company’s commitment to infrastructure-led growth and improved service delivery. “This network upgrade demonstrates our dedication to investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth and improves the quality of life for our customers.
“We appeal for patience during this rehabilitation, as the benefits will be far-reaching and long-lasting,” she said.
Tunoh disclosed that the current rehabilitation represents the first phase of the network upgrade and is scheduled for completion by December 20, 2025, ahead of the original timeline.Upon completion, the improved electricity network is expected to deliver more stable power supply, fewer outages, reduced technical losses, and enhanced customer satisfaction outcomes that will directly support economic recovery and development across the region.
YEDC expressed appreciation to its customers for their cooperation, assuring them that the investment will translate into improved service quality and sustained power reliability.
