A federal lawmaker representing Demsa/Numan/Lamurde Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kwamoti B. Laori, has strongly condemned the killing of unarmed civilian protesters in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, describing the incident as an act of extrajudicial killing that must not go unpunished.
In a press statement issued on Monday, Laori expressed deep concern over the violent conflict in Lamurde, which has led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and rising tensions across affected communities. He said the killings, reportedly carried out by personnel of the Nigerian military, were “inhumane, unjustifiable, and a gross violation of fundamental human rights.”
According to the lawmaker, accounts from constituents paint a distressing picture of unarmed women who were protesting insecurity in their community when they were shot dead by security operatives deployed to the area.
“This tragic incident echoes the painful experiences of Dong, Kodomti, Lawaru, Nzuruwe, and Shaforon communities in 2017, where civilians suffered similar abuses at the hands of security personnel without credible investigation, prosecution, or compensation,” he said. “It is deeply troubling that years later, our communities are once again confronted with the same pattern of violations and impunity.”
Laori demanded an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the killings, stressing that those responsible must be identified and held accountable in accordance with Nigerian laws.
“Justice must not only be done—it must be seen to be done. Our democracy and our shared humanity demand no less,” he stated.
He extended his condolences to families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Laori also urged residents of Lamurde and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions further. He called on security agencies deployed to the area to exercise maximum restraint and adhere strictly to rules of engagement while carrying out their duties.
“We must all—community leaders, government, security agencies, and residents—work together to ensure that peace is restored swiftly and that justice is served without delay,” he added.
