In a proactive effort to enhance public safety and reduce electrical accidents, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) has launched a joint advocacy campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Urban and Regional Planning, and the National Orientation Agency (NOA). The initiative addresses the increasing violations of electrical right-of-way (RoW) in Adamawa State, particularly concerning illegal structures and commercial activities beneath high-tension (HT) power lines.
The campaign was inaugurated in Yola North Local Government Area following two tragic accidents in Jimeta, which underscored the urgent need for intervention.
Mr. Julius Idowu, Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) officer at YEDC, explained, “Right-of-way violations occur when structures are built under high-tension lines or during commercial activities beneath electrical installations.” He warned that such violations not only endanger lives but also threaten the reliability of electricity supply.
Engr. Albert Lungu from the Ministry of Environment highlighted the long-term health risks associated with electromagnetic radiation from HT lines, citing potential links to serious conditions such as heart failure and cancer. He stressed the importance of awareness in preventing these hazards.
Barr. Jibrin Ibrahim, Chairman of Yola North Local Government, praised the inter-agency collaboration and emphasized the necessity of collective efforts. “When we work together, we achieve results,” he stated, pledging to engage community leaders and organizations in support of the initiative.
Ibrahim also pointed to rapid urbanization and poor planning as factors contributing to RoW violations, advocating for more careful planning and adherence to safety standards in future developments.
The advocacy campaign will feature various initiatives, including:
- Electronic media campaigns
- Physical outreach programs across the state
- Community engagement and sensitization
- Collaboration with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Land and Survey and Urban Regional Planning
YEDC remains committed to ensuring safe and reliable electricity distribution and urges the public to report any RoW violations or safety concerns encountered within the network.
