
The Supreme court has ruled that local government allocations must be paid directly into local governments account. The apex court by this ruling shas made unconstitutional and illegal for state governments to withdraw funds from local government account in the country.
In its ruling the Supreme Court rules,
“Allocations are to be paid directly to Local Government Councils immediately ~Supreme Court.
“The Section of the Constitution for joint allocations automatically got deleted without NASS Amendment .
“Appointment of Caretaker committees is illegal and unconstitutional, no governor has any powers to appoint any CTC ~Supreme Court.
“That State governors have constituted themselves as dangerous species to the development of democracy ~Supreme Court.”
LGAs in Nigeria have been under the thumb of state governments, but with this ruling it remains to be seen how the judgement would FasTrack developments at the grassroot and deal a great blow to the corruption that surrounds local governments and state Treasury.
