27th Convocation: MAU Yola to Graduate 4638

– To Confer Honours on Sultan, Boni Haruna, Others…

The Modibbo Adama University, Yola is set to graduate 4638 students in various academic fields at its 27th Convocation Ceremony to be held at the campus premises in Yola, Adamawa State. The vice chancellor of the University, Prof. Liman Tukur while briefy newsmen in Yola, said this year’s ceremony, the 27th Convocation Ceremony of the institution, presents the University with the opportunity to revert to its annual convocation ceremony after it was disrupted by the twin phenomena of the Covid-19 pandemic and the protracted Industrial actions observed by the university-based unions which characterized the period between 2020/2022. Tukur said as the University continue to make progress, government must commit resources into the University system in order to boost it’s productivity. Tukur said, “This year, we are graduating one set of candidates that completed their Academic programmes of the previous session, the 2020/2021 Academic Session. During the Convocation, we shall graduate a total of 4,638 Candidates in all. “A breakdown of which indicates that for the Bachelor’s Degree, we shall award 63 first class, 1,069 second class upper, 1,783 second class lower, 552 third class and 40 pass degrees. While in the category of higher degrees, we shall award 72 postgraduate diplomas, 480 Masters degrees and 80 Ph.Ds. in various disciplines. (The certificates of all the graduates are ready for collection on the day of Convocation).” Tukur explained that the 27th Convocation Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim. He said, “With great pride, we welcome our 27th Convocation Lecturer, a scholar of international repute, social critic and democratic activist, the renowned Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim; Senior Fellow, Centre for Democracy and Development Abuja, Prof. Jibrin has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading voices on matters relating to our democracy, leadership and educational development. “The title of his lecture is The University and The Public Good: Pathway to Rediscovery.” “This will be delivered by 4:00 pm on Friday 12th May at the University Multipurpose Hall.” The University Don said the institution will be confering honorary degrees to some eminent Nigerians to mark the graduation ceremony. Liman Tukur said, “During the Convocation, we shall be conferring our Honorary Doctorate Degrees on four distinguished personalities for their contributions to humanity for which the MAU Yola would love its alumni to emulate. “Those to be conferred with Honorary Degrees are; His Eminence, Alh. Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, the Sultan of Sokoto, Doctor of Law, (Honoris Causa), Alh. Muhammad Indimi Philanthropist and Businessman, Doctor of Management (Honoris Causa), His Excellency, Boni Haruna Former Governor of Adamawa State, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa), Alh. Dahiru Bobbo Seasoned Administrator and Educationist, Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa).” The vice chancellor used the occasion to call for the immediate funding of public universities in order to allow for free recruitment of staff by tertiary institutions and to address the immediate needs of institutions in the country.

Modibbo Adama University (MAU) in Yola, Adamawa State, is set to hold its 27th Convocation Ceremony on May 12th, where a total of 4638 students will graduate in various academic fields. The event, which was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and protracted industrial actions by university-based unions, will present the university with the opportunity to revert to its annual convocation ceremony.

During the ceremony, the university will confer honorary degrees on four distinguished personalities for their contributions to humanity. They include the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alh. Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, who will receive a Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa); philanthropist and businessman Alh. Muhammad Indimi, who will receive a Doctor of Management (Honoris Causa); former Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency Boni Haruna, who will receive a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa); and seasoned administrator and educationist Alh. Dahiru Bobbo, who will receive a Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa).

In addition to the honorary degrees, a breakdown of the graduates indicates that the university will award 63 first-class degrees, 1,069 second-class upper degrees, 1,783 second-class lower degrees, 552 third-class degrees, and 40 pass degrees. Also, 72 postgraduate diplomas, 480 Masters degrees, and 80 Ph.Ds will be awarded in various disciplines.

The 27th Convocation Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development Abuja, on the topic “The University and The Public Good: Pathway to Rediscovery.”

In his statement, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Liman Tukur, emphasized the need for the government to commit resources to the university system to boost its productivity. He also called for the immediate funding of public universities to allow for free recruitment of staff and address the immediate needs of institutions in the country.
